"Europen mosaic art from the Middle Ages to 1900" in Germany

European mosaic art from the Middle Ages to 1900
Masterpieces from the World Cultural Heritage Vatican & St Peter’s Basilica and from European Museums
July 16 to October 9, 2011

For now exclusively in Ueberlingen, for the first time in 400 years, the Vatican will present to the public some of those precious mosaics and mosaic fragments which once decorated the early Christian times St. Peter's Basilica ("Old St. Peter") before it was finally torn down about 1609-11 to make way for today's nave of the baroque St. Peter's Basilica.

Amongst others, 21 outstanding mosaics from the early Christian and the present St. Peter’s Basilica as well as from the cathedral’s treasury and the Vatican museums will be presented in Ueberlingen. From the considerable mosaic collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum London, 17 prominent exhibits will find their way to Ueberlingen, along with 12 partly monumental works from the St. Paul's Cathedral London. About 20 works in pietra dura technique ("Florentine mosaic") from the 16th to 18th Century, which stem in part from the former property of the Medici, will be borrowed from Florentine museums. Additionally, outstanding mosaics like Valerio Zuccato’s "Portrait of Cardinal Pietro Bembo" (1542, after a draft of Titian) will go on the journey from there to Ueberlingen.

The highlights of the exhibition include major works of the Medieval Art, such as the donator’s portrait of Pope John Paul VII from the Vatican Grottoes, created from 705 to 707.
